Job Description

a) Provide evidence-based technical advice for implementation of polio eradication activities (such as immunization campaigns or supplemental immunizations) that are appropriate to the circumstances in endemic countries and/or countries with outbreaks of polio or other VPDs such as measles.

b) Provide advice in the strengthening of the AFP and VPD surveillance systems via coordination, monitoring and evaluation of surveillance activities. Includes travel to remote locations to conduct surveillance activities, which include: finding and reporting children with AFP, transporting stool samples for analysis (for the purpose of isolating and identifying poliovirus in the laboratory to map the genetic sequencing to determine the origin of the virus strain).

c) Conduct three- and six- month assessments of outbreak status, effectiveness of response and likelihood of continuing transmission of polio and other VPDs (e.g. measles). Example: Use assessment data on unvaccinated children to develop outbreak response and polio campaign plans.

d) Conduct training for GPEI partners on the topics of evaluation and documentation of outbreak response activities to ensure that all lessons learned are effectively incorporated into current best practices.

e) Participate in activities designed to promote polio, measles and other emerging vaccine preventable disease eradication, routine immunization, data quality and surveillance of new vaccines. Attend meetings and webinars with international and local partners in order to stay abreast of the most current developments in the outbreak and status of worldwide eradication. Incorporate and share lessons learned and best practices developed during work conducted on CDC polio eradication projects with country and field staff. Example: Conduct Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) reviews, surveillance assessments, data quality assessments, GIS and satellite mapping, microplanning support or other aspects of program improvement and implementation.

f) Analyze World Health Organization (WHO), Africa Regional Office (AFRO), or host country partner epidemiologic data as it relates to VPD surveillance, disease transmission and outbreaks for use by CDC in documentation, data management and legacy planning. Example: Use epidemiologic data and polio expertise to identify high risk districts and help build capacity to vaccinate chronically unreached and under-vaccinated children.

g) Analyze epidemiological data and working with Ministries of Health (MOH) and other international organizations (NGOs, and other Public Health organizations) to create solutions to problems that arise in polio eradication and VPD program implementation and outbreak response. Example: Identify specific improvements and activities from SIA’s that will be implemented to strengthen immunization practices at the district and national level.

h) Provide technical advice to CDC’s Strategic Information and Workforce Development (SIWD) Branch of the Global Immunization Division (GID) regarding the training and field work of National Stop Transmission of Polio (NSTOP), and Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) teams. Example: Develop training materials and courses to train polio staff on enhancing the overall immunization surveillance system. Conduct refresher training for national immunization staff.

i) Provide technical advice to the Polio Eradication Branch management regarding data collection activities in operational research, including integration projects in polio endemic countries and countries with transmission of polio, in order to assist with the analysis of the data collection and surveillance efforts during SIAs and routine immunization activities in country.

j) Participate with Polio Eradication Branch team leads in development and implementation of field project plans addressing routine immunization, data quality or surveillance, outbreak investigation, and vaccination campaigns. Use historical polio data to improve outreach activities. Example: Use data on hesitant households/communities to develop and improve microplanning activities. Develop strategies to integrate polio surveillance with VPD surveillance. Engage with community service organizations to improve outreach activities.
